Abstract

The author locates the question of citizenship in the Lusophone space within Ibero-American world, and at the same time, reflects on the crisis and changes caused by the world order imposed in the wake of the Cold War. He also proposes strategies for strengthening national/regional identities and achieving sovereign participation in world community of communication sciences.Keywords: Communication. Citizenship. Author Biography

José Marques de Melo, Universidad Metodista de São Paulo

José Marques de Melo holds the UNESCO Chair at the São Paulo Methodist University. He is currently the President of the Brazilian National Federation of Scientific and Academic Communication Associations and of the Iberian‐American Confederation of Communication Associations. Marques de Melo is founder and honorary President of the Brazilian Society of Communication Sciences (Intercom) and acted as past President of the Latin American Association for Communication Research and past Vice‐President of IAMCR. He has written numerous books and articles on communication theory in Latin American and other topics. He has also been a journalist since the age of 15. Marques de Melo is Emeritus Professor at the Communication and Arts School of the University of São Paulo and has received a number of national and international distinctions and awards, including the Wayne Danielson Award for Distinguished Contribution for Communication Scholarship, University of Texas (1997), Adelmo Genro Award, SBPJOR, Brazil (2009) and the Iberian‐American Award on Communication Theory (2010).
